August Garden To-Do's

Posted by Lisa Kipps-Brown in master gardeners , gardening

Tips from the Southside Master Gardeners to keep your garden healthy.

PLANT Late August is the best time to plant Oriental poppies.  A mulch of oak or sycamore leaves will give them needed protection the first winter.

PRUNE
Maples and birches may be pruned after new growth has hardened.

FERTILIZE
At the beginning of the month trim back and fertilize perennials for the second blooming.

Feed roses for the last time this season.  When cutting blossoms, cut above the 5-leaflet leaf.

WATER
During dry weather be sure to thoroughly water azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, and heather

Let the Tourism Dept. help market your Halifax Co. vacation rentals

Posted by Lisa Kipps-Brown in tourism , real estate

Halifax County's Department of Tourism plans to add a vacation rentals feature to their website, www.gohalifaxva.com; if you own vacation rental property in Halifax County, or live in the county and own vacation rental property that may be outside of the county but is close enough for county tourists to use (like Buggs Island Lake), contact me to find out how you can list your property on the site.

The vacation rental listings will be free, with "featured" listings available for a small fee.  Listings will be similar to the format on real estate websites, so you'll be able to include details of your property, photos, etc., and all contacts will come directly to you - not the Tourism office.
