Virginia Forage and Grassland Council Presents Southern Piedmont Summer Forage Tour
This meeting is approved for Category 90 Private Pesticide Applicator and Beef Quality Assurance recertification!

When: July 21, 2011 from 2-7:00 PM, registration at 2:00 PM, tour starts at 2:30 PM
Cost: No cost if you preregister by July 14, 2011, otherwise $10 at the door

Farm and Tour Description:
Dungeness farm located outside of Goochland, VA and is owned by the Massie family and managed by Cross River Farms LLC, a partnership between the families of David Moyer, Vernon Moyer and Robert Harper. The farm is located on the scenic James River and was home to Thomas Jefferson’s mother. The current operation consists of the following enterprises: cow/calf seedstock, custom feeding, heifer development, and retail beef. Cross River farms, LLC works closely with the Amelia Area Cattlemen, LLC to custom background calves for the Pennsylvania feeder calf market. The tour will begin with Robert Harper, owner and operator of Cross River Farms providing a general overview of the farm and its current enterprises. Participants will then be transported through a series of educational stops covering the topics listed below. The meeting will conclude with a catered meal and guest speaker.

Tour will feature the following topics:
- Breeding soundness exam and demonstration
- Role of cattle associations in value added marketingSummer annuals for high quality summer grazing
- BMR forage sorghum as an alternative to corn for silage
- Watering systems and rotational stocking
- Eastern gamagrass for summer grazing
- Crabgrass for summer forage and conservation
- Protecting surface water with grass buffer strips

Directions:
From 64. Take Gum Spring exit and head south on US-522 for approximately 7 miles. Turn right onto VA-6 W/River Rd W for 3.4 miles. Turn left onto Rock Castle Rd/State Route 600 and follow signs to farm drive entrance, which will be on the left in approximately 7 miles.
From Amelia Courthouse. From 360 turn onto Genito Rd/VA-609 heading north and follow 609 north for approximately 12.5 miles until you reach VA-13/Old Buckingham Rd. Turn right onto VA-13/Old Buckingham Rd and go approximately 2.3 miles. VA-13/Old Buckingham Rd turns into Emanuel Church Rd and then into US-522 N/Maidens Rd. Continue on US-522 for approximately 9.2 miles. Turn left onto US-522/VA-6, just after crossing James River. Continue on VA-6 W/ for 3.4 miles after US 522 goes north. Turn left onto Rock Castle Rd/State Route 600 and follow signs to farm drive entrance, which will be on the left in approximately 7 miles.
From Scottsville. Take VA-6 heading east for approximately 35 miles. Turn right onto Rock Castle Rd/State Route 600 and follow signs to farm drive entrance, which will be on the left in approximately 7 miles.
This meeting is a joint effort of the Virginia Forage and Grassland Council, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Natural Resource Conservation Service, Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Amelia Area Cattlemen, LLC.
