Reliving Life Through Music

Posted by: Lisa Kipps-Brown in Entertainment

Isn't it funny how certain songs will bring back specific memories?  Growing up the daughter of a professional musician, music always played a huge role in our lives, but the spurring of memories is something that everyone shares - whether they have any musical talent or not.

What started my thinking about this was going through some of 1045 The Dan's playlists; while it's great to be able to listen online to their classic rock, I think it's just as fun to go through the playlists and enjoy the memories they ignite.  Sometimes I'll run across a song I haven't heard in years, and it will bring back a memory I hadn't thought of in years;  I love it!

A few of the moments I've relived recently: a party at Sterling and Ann Tyler Edmunds' parents' house when I was 16 (Jimmy Buffett, "Margaritaville"); taking a road trip to VA Tech to visit my sister when I was 17 (Dire Straits, "Sultans of Swing"); and sneaking and switching the radio from our Driver's Ed station to a music station while driving around the football field in Driver's Ed class ("Steve Miller, "Fly Like an Eagle") - sorry, Coach Dyer!

1979 new wave partyMy memories are so entwined with music - looking at this picture, I always hear "My Sharona"  (The Knack,  album "Get the Knack"), and when I hear that song - or any other new wave song from that time - I'm reminded of the party.   It was a new wave party that  Dan Sizemore had at the Sportsman's Club in Halifax, summer of '79.  I had just graduated from high school, was a lifeguard at the town pool, and was getting ready to head out to Tech.  Can anyone guess who's in the pic with me?  haha - I'll bet lots of you know.

What is it about listening to old music that's almost like watching old videos of your life?  Whatever it is, I'm thankful for it - and it even takes me back to be with friends and family who are no longer with us.  Rock on!
